Here it is my latest blog- review of 'We Pray,' by Daniel G. Opperwall 🤗👍🏻📖
"The sun gives forth light; it cannot help doing so. Animals breathe in and out; they cannot help doing so. Fish swim in the sea; they cannot help doing so. What, then, are the things which a Christian cannot help doing? First of all, a Christian cannot help praying." From a quote I recently came across in another book, we hear the golden voice of Saint John Chrysostom extolling the fundamental place of prayer in the life of a Christian.
When I first came across 'We Pray,' I knew I wanted to take a look inside. I was harbouring a small hope that it would be, exactly what it turned out to be! A book for children, that focuses on this foundational aspect of our Faith, and explains the what and how, the where and when, of prayer. The book does well in implying that for an Orthodox Christian, this basically means everywhere and all the time! Through private and communal prayer, prayer of the heart, prayers of praise and thanksgiving, through psalms and scripture, and with consideration for the whole world, 'We Pray' introduces it all to children in a gentle and engaging way. Together with the beautiful, detailed illustrations, the book manages to join us all; our families, our monastics, our priests and bishops, our departed loved ones, our forefathers and Saints, and all creation, in common unity and love through our PRAYER.
'We Pray' has inspired me to further familiarise my children with psalms, scripture, and prayer of the heart, discuss with them how natural it should be to both 'talk' and listen in our prayer, and not just at home in front of our icon corner.
A book to be treasured, edified by, and delight in for children ages 3+ (and their parents!)
